GUESTBOOK

The Aikido Institute of Newfoundland has its origin in the Aikido initiated in this province during the mid 1960’s by the late Graham Burt Sensei.

The Aikido Institute is affiliated with World Aikido Headquarters through its membership in the USAF (Eastern Region) and our immediate instructional line is Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan, New York Aikikai.

Over the years we have had several changes in location as well as in dojo name. Yet, our chief instructor and the core of dan ranks who were instrumental in seeing our dojo survive during fledgling years remain the same. Most classes are taught by the chief instructor with the assistance of those dan ranks.

Classes are comprised usually of about twenty to twenty-five aikidoka and we practice steadily throughout the year with the exception of major holiday occasions. For the usual reasons, summer classes tend to be somewhat smaller.

Normally students who apply for instruction are required to be of high school age or older, with some exceptions, and all age groups practice together.

The Institute sponsors major seminars as often as finances permit. Local weekend seminars are held at least once a semester.

It is our conviction that Aikido is first and foremost a martial art. We practice a firm Aikikai style and adhere to the standards and requirements of the USAF (Eastern Region).

In our dojo there is a place for all who wish to practice and participate in the Way of Aiki as was the intention of the Founder, Morihei Uyeshiba. Each student is encouraged to practice regularly and sincerely with the goal of opening doors of learning and pursuing personal growth and development.

As you browse through our site you will learn more about us – our rich past, our exciting present and our promising future.
